ST CATHARINES – 13th Street Gallery located at 1776 Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines is proud to announce its upcoming exhibition DAVID URBAN featuring works by the artist from the private collection of John Mann opening Saturday September 25, 2021. According to Urban, John’s private collection is a good representation of all his works through his career. David Urban is one of Canada’s most celebrated artists, his works can be found in major galleries such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery, Musee des beaux-arts de Montréal and Museum London.
David Urban’s paintings are dynamic with bold collisions of line and shape, clashing tones, kinetic brushstrokes that border between abstraction and representation. A modern-day Renaissance-man, Urban’s interests and passions are extensive; he is a poet, a painter and a musician who plays multiple instruments. Reflecting on music, childhood and the primacy of the imagination, David’s paintings are deeply implicated in the history and methodology of paint. He integrates both real and abstract elements, simultaneously presenting two disparate threads of modern painting.
Born in Toronto in 1966, Urban studied at York University and graduated in 1989 with a BA in English Literature and a BFA specializing in Painting and Drawing. In 1991 he received an MA in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Windsor and completed an MFA in 1994 from the University of Guelph.
The exhibition will continue until Saturday October 30, 2021
