X is the most primitive of marks and is a signifier for many things; X is the unknown. For those who could not read or write, X served as their signatures. X is the female chromosome and XY is the male. X, Y and Z form Cartesian coordinates orienting points in space. Boaks has used X’s, Y’s and Z’s in many of the paintings and collages he creates, allowing the viewer to consider their particular significance.
Made out of welded found steel, Boaks has also created a number of Y and Z sculptures.
