About Paul Sloggett

Paul Sloggett, AOCA, RCA, graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1973, and is considered to be part of the ‘third generation’ of abstract painters in Canada—a group of painters that were largely graduates of the Ontario College of Art and the New School, and whose work began to appear in Toronto galleries in the mid-1970s.

Sloggett is a disciplined, controlled painter, who questions the pictorial field through strongly asserted geometric design. He was inspired by modernist abstraction, having analyzed and internalized the paintings of Jack Bush, Frank Stella and Kenneth Noland. Roald Nasgaard makes the observation in his book, Abstract Painting in Canada, that “the spatial illusions generated by his collage-like construction is an effect we might expect from an artist who explained that he has always felt as if he was building paintings as opposed to painting pictures.”

Sloggett was awarded a Teaching Assistantship Scholarship to work under the direction of Royden Rabinowitch, chair of Experimental Art.
